ALLAHABAD: In a tragic incident, four children were drowned in the pond after they slipped into the deep water in
Jagannath Ka Purwa village, Suryagarh under the limits of Kohadur police station of Prataparh district on Sunday afternoon.
As soon as the children, all hailing from neighbouring Suryagarh, Jagannath Ka Purwa village, fell into the pond, villagers raised an alarm and the police with the help of local swimmers managed to fish out their bodies.
The deceased have been identified as
Arti (10), Shivani ( 13), Ruchi ( 14) and Anup (11) , all residents of Jagannath Ka Purwa village.
Deputy inspector general of police (
Prayagraj Range) KP Singh told TOI that the incident took place when a group of children had gone to take bath at a local pond.
He said, "It was Anup who first entered into pond and started drowning". When three other girls – Arti ,
Shavani and Ruchi – noticed Anup drowning, they went one by one to save each other and drowned.
Hearing cries of the girls, some other children playing near the pond informed the villagers. However, it was too late for the family members to save the children and police were called in.
Upon being alerted, a team of Kohadur police along with swimmers rushed to the spot and managed to fish out bodies within half an hour. The police took bodies to a nearby hospital where doctors pronounced them dead.
