KHAGARIA: Mahila College-Khagaria, a constituent unit of Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University (TMBU), lacks basic infrastructure even after 46 years of its formation.
The college was established in 1973 on the initiative of late Kedar Narain Singh Azad, a former MLA, with the help of a section of Koshi College teachers and some bigwigs of the town. With just 65 students, classes were initially held at Arya Kanya High School and later shifted to a rented building on SDO Road.

During the tenure of the then district magistrate (DM) Sudhir Tripathi, Shyamlal Trust donated a small plot of land in Baluahi locality to the college in 1977. The then Rajya Sabha member late Jagdambi Mandal also allotted a sum of Rs 6 lakh for the construction of the college’s building. Mahila College became a constituent unit of TMBU in 1987.
Even after so many years, the college still does not have a common room, playground or girls’ hostel.
“There are no science and commerce teachers at Mahila College. So, girls are getting themselves admitted to science and commerce courses available at Koshi College,” an ABVP activist, Babulal Shaurya, told this newspaper.
According to Mahila College principal Renuka Kumari, the construction of girls’ hostel is hanging in the balance.
“Last year, we had to surrender a sum of Rs 40 lakh, which was granted to us by the University Grants Commission for building a girls’ hostel. The university as well as the district administration failed to free a portion of our land from local encroachers,” Renuka said.
Meanwhile, Khagaria DM Anirudh Prasad has assured that steps will soon be taken to free the college land from encroachments.
