UP: By-election for Hamirpur assembly seat on September 23

LUCKNOW: The Election Commission of India on Sunday announced by-election for the Hamirpur assembly seat on September 23. The assembly seat fell vacant after the conviction of BJP MLA Ashok Chandel in a 22-year-old murder case. The BJP is yet to expel Chandel from the party despite his conviction.
The commission will be issuing the notification for Hamirpur seat on August 28, while the last date of filing nomination would be on September 4.

Counting of votes and declaration of the result would be on September 27.
Hamirpur is the first of the total 12 seats where by-elections has been announced by the poll panel.
By-elections for the other 11 seats have been necessitated following elections of sitting legislators to the Lok Sabha in the recently held general elections. The other 11 seats where by-elections are due include Rampur, Jalalpur, Balha, Kanpur, Jaidpur, Lucknow Cantt, Gangoh, Tundla, Banda, Iglas and Pratapgarh.
