CHHAPRA/PATNA: Saran police on Monday arrested district board chairperson Meena Arun in connection with the murder of two policemen at Marhaura on August 20. A licensed revolver issued in the name of Meena was recovered from the site of occurrence.
A police team led by Saran sadar DSP Ajay Kumar arrested Meena when she was on way to the civil court to surrender in the case.
Later, she was quizzed by SP Har Kishore Rai and other senior officials at Chhapra Town police station. “She is a named accused in the case,” the DSP said, adding she was later produced in the court, which remanded her in judicial custody.
Sub-inspector Mithilesh Kumar Sah and constable Farooq Ahmed were shot dead while another policeman, identified as Sanjiv Kumar, was injured in the incident. The assailants had escaped with an AK-47 rifle and a service revolver after killing the cops.
Rai said a special investigation team (SIT) was set up under the leadership of DSP Ajay to nab the seven named accused in the case. Earlier, another accused named Abhishek Kumar had surrendered in the court. “Raids are on to nab five other accused in the case,” the SP said, adding that efforts were on to recover the looted police arms.
An investigating officer said the seized revolver belonging to Meena had been sent to the state forensic science laboratory for ballistic examination. Meena, on the other hand, denied her involvement in the incident and said, “I had left my revolver at home a day before the incident. I don’t know how it was used in the crime.”
The police team led by slain sub-inspector Mithilesh was attacked when it was returning to the district police headquarters from a raid at the hideouts of criminals involved in a dacoity case. Mithilesh was sitting on the front seat beside the driver when the criminals opened fire. He died on the spot. Farooq and Sanjiv also suffered bullet injuries. However, Farooq died in the hospital during treatment.
Police said while four of the accused — Subodh Kumar Singh, Pawan Singh, Rohit Singh and Raju Singh — were still at large, Meena’s husband Arun Singh is lodged in Balia jail in Uttar Pradesh in connection with a double murder case.
