AGRA: A day after the release of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, Aligarh MP Satish Gautam on Sunday said that it should be implemented in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh too, as illegal migrants were "vitiating" the atmosphere of the communally sensitive city.
He said that illegal migrants especially Rohingyas, who have settled here and work in slaughter houses, should be removed as they are dangerous for the city.
He accused them of indulging in criminal activities.
Supporting the MP’s view, BJP MLA Dalveer Singh, said the removal of Bangladeshi and other illegal migrants from Aligarh is very important. He said, "I will talk to the chief minister regarding this". The list of such people has been prepared by the district authorities, he claimed.
Last year, Uttar Pradesh government had directed all district authorities to collect biometric details of Rohingya Muslims in order to ensure that no illegal migrant stays in the state.
As per figures available with the state government, around 269 Rohingya Muslims are residing in the state with majority of them (245) settled in Aligarh. Citing the reason of maximum number of Rohingyas in Aligarh district, a senior official said that minority population here is very well connected with other countries because of Aligarh Muslim University, Brass industry and slaughter houses.
Rohingyas are a minority ethnic group of Muslims, mainly from Rakhine province in northwestern Myanmar.
The final list of NRC in Assam was published on Saturday and it excluded over 19 lakh people. Whereas over three crore people have been found eligible for the inclusion in the final NRC, Prateek Hajela, the State Coordinator of the NRC, said in an official statement.
