Andhra Pradesh to set up kidney research centre in Srikakulam district

AMARAVATI: In what could be a big relief to the chronic kidney disease victims of Srikakulam district, the state government has decided to set up a super-specialty hospital and kidney research centre in Palasa of Andhra Pradesh's Srikakulam district. It will be a 200-beded super-specialty hospital with kidney research centre. A dedicated dialysis unit will also be set up in the hospital.
The government released Rs 50 crore to set up the health care institute.
The government had also accorded permission to recruit medical professionals to manage the institute.
In fact, the kidney diseases of Uddanam area in Srikakulam district was hotly debated during the election campaign. While, previous TDP government set up dialysis units to provide relief to the victims, Janasena leader Pawan Kalyan roped in some medical experts from the United Kingdom to study as to why the disease was so prevalent in Uddanam region. A team of experts from union medical and health ministry had also visited the area and studied the issue last year.
Although, the experts were failed to find conclusive reasons for the spread of kidney diseases.
Chief minister YS Jagan directed the medical and health department to set up the research centre along with the super-specialty hospital to go deep into the issue.
While, the super-specialty hospital would be headed by an additional director rank official in the medical education, a civil surgeon (RMO), an administrative officer and two senior assistant posts were sanctioned from the department. Urologists, vascular surgeon, general physician, general surgeon, anesthetist, radiologist, pathologist, microbiologist, general duty medical officers would be appointed on contractual basis.
Staff including nursing, technicians, drivers and clerical would be taken on outsourcing basis.
