PATNA: A 42-year-old pan masala businessman committed suicide at his Rajendra Colony residence in Gopalganj under Town police station area on intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Pawan Kumar Dutta, a native of Jamtara in Jharkhand.
The incident took place between 1.30am and 1.50am after he had a dispute with his wife Mani Dutta. The police were informed about the suicide around 2am and the body was sent for postmortem at Gopalganj Sadar hospital.
Pawan committed suicide by making a noose of his wife’s sari.
Town police station SHO Prashant Kumar Rai said the deceased was the regional manager of a private pan masala company, which was among the 15 pan masala brands banned in Bihar. “His job was to prepare the pan masala vendors in state for a specific brand. After the ban on pan masala, he was unemployed,” the SHO told this newspaper.
“His wife told the police that they had a dispute only half an hour before he committed suicide. Pawan left the room and hanged himself from the ceiling fan,” he said.
Sources said Pawan had taken loan from several people. The lenders were asking him to return their money. He was not able to repay the loan. His family members have been called from Jharkhand. The police have yet to record the statement of Pawan’s wife.
