SECUNDERABAD: Even as the health department is yet to put together a consolidated map of reported dengue cases, the latest deaths due to the vector-borne disease - three in the last two days - were reported from Lalapet, Mallapur and Marredpally all of which fall within Secunderabad.
Dengue-causing mosquitoes thrive in areas of poor sanitation, and as such the incidence of cases is much higher in urban slums.
While private practitioners report between 3-10 cases per day, over ten people are currently undergoing treatment at the state-run Gandhi Hospital.
Doctors whom TOI spoke to said most patients were those who spend a major chunk of their days outdoors as dengue-spreading aedes aegypti mosquitoes are active during the day. He added that he has seen 20 patients on an average per week over the last one month and most of them are sicker compared to last year's patients. "Our house is very near a garbage segregation area of GHMC. Every time it rains, there is water stagnation and the number of mosquitoes jumps," said Vijaylakshmi, a resident of SR Nagar.
