LUCKNOW: Gold and silver ornaments encrusted with diamonds and rubies have been recovered during digging for a house construction in
Sandi area of
Hardoi district in UP on late Thursday.
The
jewellery is said to be worth around Rs 27 lakh, said the police. The district administration has also written to the Archaeological Survey of India (
ASI) team in Lucknow in this connection.
According to the police, house of a sweet shop owner, Utkarsh, is being constructed in Mohallah Khidkiya area of Sandi. So far the soil on the ground was being dug for laying the foundation. On Thursday evening, while winding up the work for the day, some labourers noticed a vessel buried under the ground. Later, out of curiosity they dug a feet more and to their astonishment recovered a brass pot.
“Others insisted on digging more. The news of recovery of brass pot spread like a wild fire in the village and soon villagers flocked to catch a glimpse of the pot. In the meantime, some silver ornaments were also recovered. Later, the police were informed,” said Ram Lakhan, SHO, Sandi.
Soon senior police officers and district administration were also informed about the same, said SHO.
Superintendent of police, Hardoi, Alok Priyadarshi told TOI that he asked a jeweller to first check the genuineness of the ornaments. The jewellers claimed the ornaments to be worth Rs 27 lakh.
“Total 650 grams gold worth Rs 23 lakh and 6kg silver worth Rs 4 lakh along with brass worth several thousands was valued,” said Priyadarshi.
District Magistrate, Hardoi, Pulkit Khare said that ASI in Lucknow has been informed about the development and they will send their teams on Monday, while the valuables are currently in the possession of district administration.
