PATNA: With byelections due in five assembly and one Lok Sabha seats in the state, Bihar Congress incharge Shaktisinh Gohil on Saturday made it clear that the party would not compromise with any Grand Alliance (GA) partner as far as Samastipur parliamentary and Kishanganj assembly seats are concerned.
The five assembly seats – Kishanganj, Nathnagar, Belhar, Simri Bakhtiyarpur and Daraundha – had fallen vacant after the MLAs from these seats were elected to Lok Sabha in the recently concluded general election.
Former Congress MLA from Kishanganj Mohammad Jawed was the lone GA candidate from the state who successfully fought the Lok Sabha election from Kishanganj.
Samastipur parliamentary seat, on the other hand, had fallen vacant following sudden death of sitting MP Ram Chandra Paswan, the younger brother of LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan, in July. Congress’s Ashok Kumar had unsuccessfully contested from the Samastipur seat as GA nominee in the recently concluded Lok Sabha election.
“Samastipur and Kishanganj are our seats. As far as other seats are concerned, I have told Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee (BPCC) president Madan Mohan Jha and state secretary incharge Virender Singh Rathore to hold talks with GA partners,” Gohil, who is scheduled to reach here on Sunday, told TOI over the phone from Delhi.
Gohil, who had resigned as the Congress’s Bihar incharge taking moral responsibility for the party’s disastrous performance in the state in Lok Sabha elections, was once again given the charge on Wednesday by AICC interim president Sonia Gandhi.
Gohil said the main purpose of his Bihar visit was meeting party workers. He said two important meetings had taken place recently, one of Congress legislature party and another of GA representatives, in the state. “I will review the outcomes of these meetings,” Gohil said, adding BPCC will organise events to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Gohil is also scheduled to meet the kin of former CM Jagannath Mishra, who passed away recently.
