BJP MLA acquitted in 24-year-old triple murder case

FAIZABAD: BJP MLA from Mahsi in Bahraich, Sureshwar Singh, and four others were acquitted in a 24-year-old case in which three brothers were murdered in the district. The MLA’s brother, Brijeshwar Singh, and his three aides were, however, awarded life imprisonment in the case by a local court in Bahraich. The incident relates to the brutal killing of three brothers, Gokaran Singh, Bajrangi Singh and America Singh of Sisayya Churamani village in Hardi police station area of Bahraich district.
The three were shot dead near the village on June 26, 1995.
An FIR was lodged in connection with the murders by the victim’s cousin Shiv Mangal Singh. Sureshwar Singh (who was not MLA then), elder brother Brijeshwar Singh and their associates Kaushal Kishore, Maharajdeen, Brijlaal, Nankunva, Ramesh Kumar, Awadhesh Singh, Kaushal and Radha Mohan were named accused in the FIR. Talking to TOI, government counsel Manoj Singh, who pleaded on behalf of the prosecution, said, “Sureshwar Singh, who is now a sitting MLA, was named prime accused. Three witnesses testified before court he and his aides first overpowered the victims and Sureshwar fired from his rifle and killed them.”
