PATNA: Five policemen were arrested while extorting money from sand-laden truck drivers near Matihan Chowk under Dighwara police station area in Saran district late Friday night. The arrested Baiju Sharma, Ranjeet Singh, Allauddin Ansari, Prem Kumar Yadav and Gayakeshwar Kumar were sent to jail on Saturday.
Saran SP Har Kishore Rai said he caught the policemen during surprise check on Friday night.
While Sharma is an ASI, Ranjeet is a driver of home guards and Allauddin, Prem and Gayakeshwar are special auxiliary police (SAP) jawans, he said.
Rai said an FIR was lodged with the Dighwara police station where they were posted. The SP also suspended four other policemen who were found lax in their duty at Maharajganj under Mufassil police station area. “All the four were sitting at a place while there was a long queue of vehicles due to road blockade,” he told this newspaper over phone.
Among the suspended cops, Arjun Prasad is an ASI, Pankaj Kumar is a driver and two others are SAP jawans. The SP also ordered departmental proceedings against the erring police personnel.
This is not the first occasion when policemen have been caught extorting money from truck drivers carrying sand from Sone river. In September 2016, then Saran DM Deepak Anand had unearthed a racket of illegal transportation of sand in league with the police officers.
Anand had submitted a detailed report to the state government on transportation of sand without ‘challan’ and causing huge loss to the state exchequer. Anand had also hinted at the involvement of senior district police officers in the racket.
