Mumbai: IMD predicts heavy rainfall in city, CM Devendra Fadnavis monitoring situation

According to IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur on Sunday in districts of Palghar and Mumbai. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places in Raigad and Thane.

Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainful and various parts of Maharashtra on Sunday.

According to IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur on Sunday at few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in districts of Palghar.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places in Raigad and Thane. Further, IMD predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places in districts of Mumbai.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis will be constantly monitoring the situation in view of heavy rains in parts of the state.

He has requested Karnataka to release water from Almatti dam to avoid a flood-like situation in Kolhapur.

Discharge from Almatti has increased to 2,20,000 cusecs from 1,70,000 cusecs of water.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, "In view of the heavy rainfall, the Maharashtra Government requested the Karnataka government to release water from Almatti dam to avoid the flood-like situation in Kolhapur region. Now, discharge from Almatti increased from 1,70,000 cusecs to 2,20,000 cusecs. As of now, the situation is normal and under control."

"The Maharashtra government is constantly monitoring the situation and getting in touch with various authorities," he added.

On August 8, Karnataka had released 5 lakh cusecs water from Almatti Dam to decrease the water level in Sangli district of Maharashtra.

Due to heavy rains in Maharashtra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Nagpur on Saturday was also cancelled, a press release issued by Maha Metro said.

PM Modi was to inaugurate a new segment of Nagpur Metro and some other projects during his visit.

Rains have turned Mumbai roads into death traps. A 47-year-old auto driver in Mumbai lost his life due to potholes on the roads.

Many trains have been cancelled and rains continue to affect operations at the Mumbai airport and vehicular traffic crawls at the Eastern and Western Express Highways.

Earlier this week, flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai were affected with cancellation of 30 flights and another 118 getting delayed.

As per a live flight-tracking website, 14 incoming and 16 outbound flights were cancelled on Thursday. In addition, 118 flights were delayed, including 86 departure.
