LGBTQIA+ community in Patna celebrates a year of togetherness
A historic judgement was pronounced last year on September 6, which decriminalised consensual gay sex and scrapped Section 377. Soon after the verdict, a huge celebratory event was organised by the LGBTQIA+ community in Patna. This year too, they gathered at a place to celebrate the successful one year of legalising homosexuality. They distributed sweets and encouraged each other to be strong in their struggles.
The judgment boosted confidence among those who feared to accept it.
Reshma Prasad, secretary, Dostanasafar, said, “Homosexuality is not a crime and we all are thankful to the Indian judiciary for accepting the fact. Now, the LGBTQIA+ need not fear as the apex court of India is with them. It is a huge relief. Scrapping Section 377 made us feel that our community is also a part of this democracy. Earlier, homosexual people were bullied badly. Since transgenders like us cannot reproduce, we were also affected by this act. Now things have changed a bit, but more needs to be done for our rights.”
The LGBTQIA+ believes that though they have won the first step, their fight will continue for many more rights. Rahul (name changed), said, “We have won the first fight, but our struggles are not over yet. Society is yet not ready to accept us. In fact, when I spoke to my mother about it last year, she was shocked. So, we have to convince our parents first, and then society, so that we get equal rights.”
Sharing similar views, Mohit, a member of the community, said, “I thank the Supreme Court for this judgment, which has given us courage to speak for our rights. Now, I request our lawmakers to ensure it is implemented so that we are free to open up about our relationships. Even now, some of us are scared to talk about it at our workplaces and at other social gatherings.”
