Telangana recorded over 10,000 dengue cases in three months

As many as 1,388 new cases of dengue have been reported from across Telangana over the last six days alone — more than half of them from within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits — show records sourced from the state health department. In fact, the total count of dengue cases between June 1 and now, registered at state and private hospitals, stand an alarmingly high 10,876. The records underline August as the worst-hit given the month registered 6,800 of the total cases this season.

HYDERABAD: As many as 1,388 new cases of dengue have been reported from across Telangana over the last six days alone — more than half of them from within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits — show records sourced from the state health department. In fact, the total count of dengue cases between June 1 and now, registered at state and private hospitals, stand an alarmingly high 10,876.
The records underline August as the worst-hit given the month registered 6,800 of the total cases this season.
These revelations come at a time when officials claim that the spread of dengue is on the decline in Telangana.

While areas within GHMC limits including Hyderabad, parts of Sangareddy, Ranga Reddy and Medchal districts reported lower numbers during the initial period of the dengue season, they now stand at the top of the charts, the records indicate. Till date, these areas have collectively reported 2003 cases. Among districts of Telangana, the highest number of cases have been recorded from Khammam, Warangal Rural, Warangal Urban and Jagthiyal, sources said.
Doctors say a large number of cases these days are being reported from places such as Uppal, Hayathnagar, Shamshabad, Vikarabad, Picket, Trimulgherry and Bowenpally. “Every day, 60-70 cases of fever are reported at the Public Health Centre of which half turn out to be dengue positive. There is a significant number of patients coming in with platelet counts of between 30,000 and 40,000. This means that the severity of the virus is as high as earlier,” said a senior doctor from the area hospital in Bollarum.

Rising concern over sanitation standards in some pockets of the city, doctors said that a majority of the patients walking into their clinics are in the 5 to 18 year bracket. “As compared to a month ago, there is an increase in cases coming from areas like Chandrayangutta, Barkas, Shaheennagar and Malakpet as well. Fogging has not been done in half these places,” said Dr Shafi, consultant infectious diseases working in Malakpet area.
Owing to the rise in cases, several corporate hospitals that TOI spoke to admitted that they are forced to turn away patients for being unable to handle the load in their intensive care units. Several such patients are, therefore, compelled to visit the state-run Gandhi Hospital and Osmania General Hospital (OGH).
At OGH, 25 cases of dengue are being reported per day, said official sources, at least half of them being those turned away by private hospitals. “Compared to a fortnight ago, the number of dengue cases on an average have not increased or decreased. Our dengue wards have no more place to accommodate patients,” said an official source.
