Movie goers will be greeted into a Gateshead cinema by a string quartet when Downton Abbey makes its debut.

The Arco String Quartet will perform songs from the 1920s as well as iconic film sound track pieces in the foyer of Vue Gateshead on Friday September 13, to celebrate Downton Abbey hitting screens.

The musicians will perform between 5.30pm and 6.30pm on Friday.

They will be dressed in ballroom atire, as will several members of the Vue team, so customers can get an Edwardian selfie before the shows start.

Based on the much-loved Downtown Abbey TV show, the original cast including Dame Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery and Hugh Bonneville, will return to the aristocratic drama of the Crawley family as they prepare for a personal visit from the Royal Family.

Kirsty McDowell, one of the members of the Arco String Quartet set to perform on the evening, said: “We’re very excited to be able to partner with the team at Vue Gateshead to offer film and Downton Abbey fans, a ceremonious way to get excited about the new release.

“We hope that everyone enjoys our musical medley which will capture the atmosphere of the famous TV mansion.”

Some of the film's scenes were shot in Beamish's 1920s town . Beamish has been used as a Downton set for the TV series too, as has Alnwick Castle.

Charlene Adey-Reed, General Manager at Vue Gateshead, said: “Downton Abbey is already set to be one of the biggest films of the year and we wanted to make the opening day a memorable experience for our customers.

“We look forward to seeing everyone on the day and welcome guests to capture the moment with a selfie with one of our dapper-dressed staff members.”
