HC quashes police call to detain T Veerapan
Hyderabad: The Telangana high court on Thursday quashed the Ramagundam police commissioner’s decision to detain Yedla Srinivas alias Telangana Veerappan, an alleged forest timber robber under Preventive Detention (PD) Act.
The bench of Chief Justice Raghavendra Singh Chauhan and Justice A Abhishek Reddy pronounced this order after hearing the plea filed by detainee’s mother.
The bench cited procedural discrepancies like not informing the detainee the grounds of his detention and not obtaining the state approval within the stipulated time etc as reasons for the order. The bench heard the argument of Gattu Venkata Nagamani, the counsel for the petitioner who charged the authorities with acting at the behest of their political masters for framing Srinivas in various cases. The bench directed the state to release Srinivas immediately from the prison if he is not wanted in any other cases.
