NEW DELHI: Following TOI’s report about an elderly woman and her daughter being held captive in their Sarita Vihar house and robbed by their newly-employed household help, Crime Branch has arrested the maid. The accused woman’s associate is still at large.
The investigation began on September 10 even though the incident had taken place on September 2. Till then, the local police were still hunting for clues.
Sub-inspector Priyanka received a tip-off about the suspect, Bhuvaneshwari alias Sabina, after which she was nabbed from Sarai Kale Khan.
Police recovered Rs 88,000 in cash, jewellery, watches and the documents of the complainant. A screwdriver, nylon zips and the scooter used in the crime were also seized.
Sabina told police that she had met a man from Nepal two months ago and struck up a friendship. They hatched a plot of getting employed at a rich person’s house in south Delhi and committing robbery. She then bought a new phone and SIM card on a fake ID. “On August 31, her friend gave her a bottle of sedatives and asked her to mix it in the food of the employers. On September 2, Sabina laced the lunch with the drug and then committed the robbery,” DCP Ram Gopal Naik said.
The elderly woman’s daughter, a private firm employee, said she hired the maid on August 31 through a placement agency to take care of her mother who had undergone knee replacement surgery. “We had initially rejected the woman, but the agency insisted we keep her on trial for three days claiming that she was an excellent worker,” the daughter told TOI.
On September 2, the elderly woman and her daughter went to rest after having lunch. However, the daughter woke up after hearing a noise. She saw the maid ransacking the house with two men armed with a khukri and a pistol. “The trio threatened to shoot me if I didn’t tell them where the valuables were kept. Later, they gagged and bound my hands and feet. They also did the same to my mother,” she said.
While one of the robbers stood guard, the other two went to the bedrooms, broke open the almirah and took away all the jewellery, cash and small electronic gadgets. They also took away the DVR of the CCTV cameras.
