PATNA: Eleven persons, including the woman Renu Kumari (42), who had allegedly created ruckus after being fined Rs 5,000 for not wearing seat belt at Exhibition Road roundabout, were sent to jail on Friday.
Renu on Thursday was issued a challan at the Exhibition Road traffic intersection for not wearing a seat belt in the front seat of the car. She protested and commuters passing through the road attacked the policemen and pelted them with stones alleging high-handedness on their part in the name of traffic rule violations.
Gandhi Maidan police had detained the 11 persons.
Police said Renu is a nurse at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). The others arrested were identified as Ramesh Jaiswal (55) and his sons Rahul Ranjan (25) and Raju Ranjan (23), Anup Kumar (43), Chandan Kumar (18), Kashinath Kumar (29), Yogeshwar Kumar, Viru Kumar (25), Amit Kumar (30) and Sujeet Kumar (25).
Police said Renu was travelling with Ramesh and his sons in the car at the time of the incident. Ramesh lives in Sharda Lok Apartment at S K Puri in the state capital.
An FIR was lodged against the 11 persons and at least 200 other unknown people on Thursday on the basis of sub-inspector Brajesh Kumar Singh’s statement. It was Brajesh who had flagged the car to stop as Renu was not wearing seat belt.
Gandhi Maidan SHO Sunil Kumar said when the woman protested against the fine imposed for violation of traffic rules, some local shopkeepers also joined the protest and attacked policemen. “CCTV footages of the spot were being scanned by police to identify the others who were also involved in the violence,” he said.
“She complained of abdominal pain. When police repeatedly urged her to get medically examined at the government hospital, she refused,” he said. The SHO said the car was also seized.
He said the arrested persons have been charged with using criminal force and voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servants from discharging duty, rioting, unlawful assembly and criminal intimidation.
