PUNE: The Pune rural police on Thursday arrested a duo for the murder of two men, whose charred remains were found in a car in Tamhini ghat in July this year.
The two deceased — Vijay Aba Salunke (32) of Banda in Sindhudurg district, and his brother-in-law Vikas Vilas Gosavi (28), a resident of Nipani in Karnataka — had been missing since July 30. Their bodies were found in the gutted car near Pimpri village on July 3.

Police said the arrested duo — Ashok Hilam (31) and Ganesh Waghmare (27), both from Mangaon in Raigad district — had killed Salunke and Gosavi in revenge.
According to the police, Hilam and Waghmare are involved in the illegal trafficking of the scales of pangolin, and khairi wood.
Salunke’s brother Subhash, in a complaint with the Paud police, alleged that Hilam had dealings with his brother. Subhash alleged that Salunke and the suspects had a dispute over a deal in 2018.
Sometime later, in 2018, the Thane police had arrested the duo. “The duo held Salunke and Gosavi responsible for the arrests, and hatched a plot to murder them,” inspector Padmakar Ghanwat said.

During the course of their investigation, the police received information about Hilam’s whereabouts. Police went to Mangaon and took the duo into custody. Their accomplices are on the run.
Ghanwat said the suspects contacted Salunke and Gosavi about a good deal on pangolin scales. The two men left home on June 27, stayed for two days in a lodge at Mangaon, and left for Lonavla on June 30. “They picked up the suspects on the way to Tamhini ghat,” Ghanwat said.
At Tamhini, the suspects and three accomplice — who were already waiting — thrashed the duo. “The suspects then garrotted the duo to death and dumped their bodies in the car,” Ghanwat said.
Police said the plan was to abandon the car with the bodies in Kundalika valley, but the car broke down. The suspects set it on fire and fled the scene.
