BOLPUR: Birbhum was on the boil on Saturday after district BJP president Shyamapada Mandal was arrested from a dharna against alleged police inaction in the death of party activist Swarup Garai.
BJP supporters burnt tyres on the Sainthia-Behrampore state highway, halting traffic for hours. “Police couldn’t trace a single person named in the FIR in the assault case but arrested those protesting against police inaction,” a BJP worker said.
Swarup had died in a Kolkata hospital on Sunday, two days after being shot at in Nanoor.
Mandal and some of his colleagues were taken into custody after police asked them to wind up the 6-day dharna at district headquarters Suri, citing prohibition clauses clamped on the area. Mandal was taken to Sadaipur police station.
When BJP leader Bharati Ghosh reached Sadaipur, police didn’t allow her to meet Mandal in custody.
“The police action is arbitrary and undemocratic. We will take legal steps against them,” Ghosh said at BJP’s Birbhum party office.
