HYDERABAD: A software engineer was arrested for conning his colleagues to the tune of Rs 11 lakh on the pretext of treatment for his father. However, he used the money allegedly for gambling online and substance abuse.
Raidurgam police said Varun Vasanthan, a resident of Alwal, had borrowed Rs 1 lakh from his colleague Venkatesh, claiming he has to foot his father’s heart operation bill.
After four months, when the victim asked Varun to return the money, he stopped attending office.
Later, Venkatesh discovered that Varun had conned his colleagues too to the tune of Rs 11 lakh.
Police tracked him down. On interrogation, they discovered that his parents were hale and hearty. He reportedly took loans to gamble online, consume alcohol and do drugs. Police said he was produced before magistrate and sent to 14-day judicial remand.
