PUNE: Gold jewellery worth Rs5.75 lakh was stolen from the house of a State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) constable in Wanowrie between August 20 and September 12.
The constable’s wife, Ashwini Khedekar (26), lodged a complaint with the Wanowrie police on Friday in this regard. The constable is currently posted at Gadchiroli.
“Khedekar had kept the ornaments in a safe inside her cupboard and handed over the keys to her mother-in-law before leaving for her parents’ place in Ahmednagar on August 20.
The woman found the ornaments missing when she returned home on Thursday,” senior inspector Krantisinh Patil of the Wanowrie police said.
Patil said preliminary investigation indicated a person known to the family was involved in the robbery.
“Khedekar’s mother-in-law and other family members were staying in her house during her absence,” Patil said, adding, “The robbery occurred during their stay. At the time of the inspection, doors and the locks of the cupboard were found intact, although the keys of the cupboard and house were missing.”
Patil said they suspect it to be an insider’s job. “Our investigation isunder way,” the officer said.
The police have registered a complaint under IPC Section 380 (theft).
