Maharashtra: Two Naxals killed in encounter in Gadchiroli district

In a change of tactics, the Gadchiroli police launched operations to corner Naxals who generally remain dormant during the rainy season due to immobility caused by heavy rain.

Two Naxals were killed in an encounter with police in the Dhanora tehsil of Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district on Sunday.

“The encounter ensued during a raid by our party on a Naxal camp close to Chhattisgarh border around 7.30 AM,” Superintendent of Police Shailesh Balkawde told The Indian Express. Two bodies–one male and another female were recovered from the spot, he added.

This was the fifth police raid on the Naxals camp during the rainy season. In two previous raid, at Pusur and Darachi, two Naxals were killed.

“It was an input based operation launched on Saturday. The Naxal group, comprising about 25 members of company 4 of CPI Maoist was camping on the spot. When we cornered them, they started firing. In the ensuing exchange of fire that lasted for over an hour, two Naxals were killed. We suspect more Naxals have taken hit,” Balkawde added.

In a change of tactics, the Gadchiroli police launched operations to corner Naxals who generally remain dormant during the rainy season due to immobility caused by heavy rain. The police, however, have managed to continue the offensive despite the district receiving one of the highest rainfall in many years.
