The Pool

ABC, 7.40pm

"Water is our nation's life blood, where we truly celebrate our freedom," declares narrator Richard Roxburgh at the beginning of this two-part documentary about the multitude of often complex connections the inhabitants of this country have to swimming pools and waterholes. These bodies of water can be our sustenance, our town square and the place where we're socially baptised. The guiding tone can be a touch portentous, but that does match the rich and vivid cinematography, which soars above picturesque ocean baths and plunges into the water of suburban swimming pools. Water, in this country, brings possibilities for cultural, political and economic change. Sally Aitken's series is an insightful way of exploring that.
