Over 45,000 people evacuated as heavy rain lashes Madhya Pradesh

The state has received 33 per cent (1176.2 mm against 882.6 mm) rainfall above the long period average (LPA). Out of 52 districts, 33 have received excess rainfall while 17 have received average rainfall. Only Shahdol and Sidhi districts have received 22 and 24 per cent rainfall less than the LPA.

Over 45,000 people have been shifted to safer places, nearly 20,000 of them in the last 24 hours in Mandsaur and Neemuch districts, as Madhya Pradesh, especially districts in western and central areas, continued to suffer from heavy rainfall.

The state has received 33 per cent (1176.2 mm against 882.6 mm) rainfall above the long period average (LPA). Out of 52 districts, 33 have received excess rainfall while 17 have received average rainfall. Only Shahdol and Sidhi districts have received 22 and 24 per cent rainfall less than the LPA.

Mandsaur and Neemuch bore the brunt, having received 160 per cent and 122 per cent more (of long-period average) rainfall respectively. Residents of more than 125 villages in Mandsaur have been shifted to safer places.

Meanwhile, Dhundhadka in Mandsaur received 39 cm rainfall on Saturday while Manasa in Neemuch and Jeerapur in Rajgarh districts received 24 and 19 cm rainfall on Saturday.
As many as 53 relief camps have been set up in Mandsaur where nearly 13,000 people have been affected by heavy rainfall. Villages in the vicinity of the Gandhisagar dam have been evacuated as water level continue to rise. Rumours circulating about the safety of the dam were denied by authorities.

According to a government spokesman, out of 28 major dams in the state, gates of 19 dams have been opened with almost all major rivers flowing above or close to a danger level.

Rescue and relief operations have been conducted in 36 of the 52 districts which have received extremely heavy or heavy rainfall with the help of state and national disaster emergency response forces and local police force. As many as 255 district disaster response centers and 51 emergency operation centers are operating round the clock.
Army has been put on alert.

As many as 62 army personnel have been deployed in Bhind to evacuate four villages that are likely to face submergence due to the overflowing Chambal river.

About Rs 100 crore has been distributed as relief for human and property loss in the state, and survey is being carried out to assess loss to crop, especially soybean and pulses, private and government property. Crops in more than 15 lakh hectare land have been damaged and more than 15,000 houses have been damaged so far, the spokesman told.

The government has already spent 325 crore out of the Rs 1,066 crore state disaster response fund and will now require special assistance from the national disaster response fund.

An inter-ministerial central team (IMCT) is likely to visit the state soon on a request from the state government. Government sources said MP would submit a detailed memorandum for assistance by the end of next week.
