NEW DELHI: For the third week in a row, problems at Delhi University’s School of Open Learning (SOL) refused to die down. Classes for 90,000 BA (programme) students were cancelled by the SOL authorities on Sunday without intimation.
Close to 30,000 students travelled to their respective class centres, only to be asked to go back. Many students gheraoed the centres. Those who were allotted the centre at Gargi College blocked Siri Fort Road in protest before police came and asked them to disperse.
The students alleged that the chaos at the personal contact programme (PCP) classes was “due to apathy and mismanagement by the administration.”
The SOL director, however, said that no BA (programme) classes were scheduled on Sunday.
Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS), a students’ group, claimed, “The classes were cancelled without the SOL administration even bothering to inform students. Thousands of first-year students reached their PCP centres in the morning, but were forced to return after being told that classes had been cancelled.”
KYS also alleged that the SOL administration had failed to implement the CBCS curriculum this year. “Neither have the teachers been appointed for the current session, nor has study material been made available to the students,” the group added.
Another senior member of the School Of Learning administration said that students were told about the cancellation of the classes. “We held classes for political science in two shifts today and couldn’t accommodate BA(P) students. The students need to know that these are not regular but counselling classes, so we cannot accommodate them all,” the official said.
