MUMBAI: A railway guard was taken by surprise when a thief accosted him and snatched his mobile phone at Mahim Harbour station on Saturday night. While Satyendra Kumar Mahato applied the emergency brakes and chased the thief, the latter managed to escape.
"The train service was delayed by over 15 minutes as the guard attempted to retrieve his stolen property," said Central Railway chief spokesperson Shivaji Sutar.
The 7.41pm Harbour line local was bound to Andheri from CSMT, and it arrived on platform 5 at Mahim at 8.11pm.
As the train was departing, an unidentified man approached guard's cabin. According to the FIR registered later, the guard, Mahato, was hit on the chest by the thief. He grabbed a rod in the cabin as he lost balance and was about to fall off the train. His phone fell onto the tracks and he applied the emergency brakes. He spotted the thief picking his phone up, and got off the train to chase him. The thief ran, crossed the tracks and escaped through a gap in the wall.
Mahato had screamed for help and chased the thief, but in vain. Mahato told TOI, "The thief took me by surprise. I was about to lose balance and fall off the train too. It could have been life threatening. He snatched my mobile and fled. I tried to chase him but was unable to get my phone back."
Police believe the thief is 20-25 years old, and has a slim build. He ran towards the slum colony located outside the station. The train left Mahim at 8.28pm. After completing his duty, the guard lodged a complaint with the Wadala railway police, who registered a case under IPC section 382. No arrests have been made so far.
