Rohingya repatriation: Momen seeks UK’s support
Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen has sought support from UK parliamentarians to ensure a safe and sustainable return of Rohingyas to their homeland in Northern Rakhine State of Myanmar.
"We hope that the UK would support us in the international forum especially in the United Nations for mounting pressure on Myanmar to ensure return of the Rohingyas," the foreign minister said in press a statement issued today.
Momen made the call when fourteen British Parliamentarians led-by Ann Mette Kjaerby called on him at his ministry office in Dhaka on Sunday.
The British parliamentarians are now visiting Bangladesh as a study tour on sexual and reproductive health.
Outlining the financial and environmental impact caused by the Rohingyas, Momen said the government is currently undertaking housing project for the Rohingyas.
He expressed deep appreciation to the support given by the politicians and the people of the United Kingdom during the Liberation War of Bangladesh and apprised the delegation about the socio-economic developments of the country.
The foreign minister expressed hope that the cooperation between Bangladesh and the UK in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and Delta Plan-2100 will be continued.
The visiting members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Population, Development and Reproductive Health commended Bangladesh's role for hosting 1.1 million Rohingyas here.
They also lauded Bangladesh's remarkable achievements in the fields of child and maternal health, poverty reduction, women empowerment, technology and capacity building sectors.
They also assured that the UK will continue work with Bangladesh for the overall development of Bangladesh and to ensure the safe return of the Rohingyas to Myanmar.
