For non-resident Malayalis, Onam celebrations go well beyond the 10-days back home in Kerala. From smaller events at residential complexes, to bigger ones at clubs, Bengaluru is witnessing a lot of festivities. The celebrations this time gain significance, considering that only a year ago, Kerala was devastated by floods and all Malayali associations in Bengaluru had sent their Onam funds (and more) for relief work.
Last weekend, for instance, saw members of a Malayali association get together to celebrate the harvest festival with a host of activities. From a competition for the best floral arrangement, to song-and-dance routines by members, a dance performance by visually-challenged students, to shinkarimelam (traditional percussion) by an all-woman group, and more, there was much to enjoy. Of course, no Onam celebration is complete without the
traditional sadya.
