Set Photo Reveals James Wan's Mortal Kombat Movie Is Officially Filming

Mortal Combat X

Before he directed Aquaman, James Wan was best known for his contributions to the horror genre. He directed The Conjuring, Insidious, Insidious: Chapter 2, Saw and a slew of other popular horror films. But when Aquaman proved itself a box office success, a world of new opportunities opened up for Wan.

Now, James Wan is involved in a number of high-profile projects, some of them superhero-centric, some of them not. One of these films is Simon McQuoid's upcoming Mortal Kombat film, which Wan is producing. And now, we have a set photo that confirms the film's production is officially underway. Get excited!

Greg Russo, the film's writer, recently took to Twitter to share a photo from the film's set. You can check it out below!

Now I know this isn't much, but it's something! A concrete something. What's more, this news comes just two months after the film's version of Sub-Zero was cast, making the film's eventual release feel far more real. After James Wan's comments about the film's production, these developments are encouraging. We're actually getting news fairly consistently, so fans of the franchise had best start getting excited. After all, the film will have game-accurate fatalities. Are you ready for that?

The film marks McQuoid's feature film debut, so it will be interesting to see how he handles what may end up coming a blockbuster (if he does a good job). It's far too early to make predictions or have informed opinions about the film, but the hype surrounding its release has us intrigued. Hopefully it's great! It's not fun rooting against films before we know anything about them, especially when the film in question is under the direction of a newer filmmaker. We have to give them a chance, right?

Paul W.S. Anderson directed a moderately successful Mortal Kombat film back in 1995 before John R. Leonetti took over for its sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. To this day, Leonetti's ill-fated sequel is hated by fans and critics alike. I mean, it is pretty abysmal. Can you really blame them?

McQuoid's Mortal Kombat movie stars Joe Taslim, Ludi Lin, Josh Lawson, Chin Han, Mehcad Brooks, Lewis Tan, newcomer Sisi Stringer, Hiroyuki Sanada, Jessica McNamee, Tadanobu Asano and Max Huang. It is executive produced by Larry Kasanoff, Michael Clear, E. Bennett Walsh, and Jeremy Stein. Todd Garner is producing the film alongside Wan.

But what do you think? Will Simon McQuoid's Mortal Kombat work or should the franchise focus its efforts on continuing to deliver great video games? Sound off in the comments below and remember to acquaint yourself with the movies still slated for release in 2019.

Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat is scheduled to hit theaters on March 5, 2021. Stay tuned for updates!
