MUMBAI: Several citizens and animal rights groups held a demonstration at Yari Road, Andheri (west), on Sunday to demand stronger animal protection laws. They said the existing Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, lacked teeth.
Led by social welfare group, 'Aaj Ki Awaaz', the activists and animal lovers said the recent case of a butcher stabbing a dog to death compelled them to hold the demonstration.
Ajay Kaul, president of Aaj Ki Awaaz, said the maximum penalty for killing or maiming an animal under the PCA Act was between Rs 50 and Rs 100 and it was a bailable offence too.
