BENGALURU: Decks have been cleared for police commissioner Bhaskar Rao to shift to his official residence, 45 days after he assumed office.
On Sunday, Rao’s predecessor, Alok Kumar, who had been shunted out after a brief 47-day tenure at the helm of city police, vacated the official residence after DGP Neelamani N Raju’s intervention.
Police sources said Rao had to approach Neelamani N Raju twice over the issue.
Kumar had sought time after the state police chief had issued him a notice to vacate the official residence. TOI had reported it on August 29.
Sources said Rao would shift to the official residence next to his office on Infantry Road after September 28. It was for the first time that a police commissioner and his predecessor locked horns over the official residence.
Source said whenever a commissioner is transferred, the outgoing officer vacates the residence for his successor at the earliest or a maximum of one week.
Rao has been commuting to work from his house in Basavanagudi. In his letter to the DG&IGP, Rao had said he was facing logistical issues as he was not able to move into his designated residence.
It may be recalled that Kumar was not personally present to hand over charge to Rao on August 2 and perhaps for the first time in the history of the Bengaluru police commissionerate, the change of guard happened without the ceremonial baton change.
The posting row also hit a new low after audio recordings of an allegedly intercepted phone conversation between Rao and a power broker was leaked. The Central Bureau of Investigation is probing the telephone-tapping case. The commissioner’s official residence is equipped with dedicated hotlines. The official residence is a stone’s throw from Vidhana Soudha, the seat of power.
