BENGALURU: Chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday finally broke his silence over BJP national president Amit Shah’s ‘one nation, one language’ appeal, stressing on the importance of state language Kannada.
While many cabinet colleagues gave a measured response, Yediyurappa took to social media 48 hours later to say: “All official languages in our country are equal.
However, as far as Karnataka is concerned, #Kannada is the principal language. We will never compromise its importance and are committed to promote Kannada and our state’s culture.”
His statement comes amid growing clamour over Shah’s tweets. “There is no question of imposing Hindi in Karnataka or replacing Kannada or the other local languages in South India. The three-language policy will continue with primacy to Kannada, followed by English and any local vernacular,” BJP’s G Madhusudana said.
