What's on TV: Wednesday, September 25

The Block

Nine, 7.30pm

The Block on Wednesday night is a bit of a variety hour. There's a challenge, which generally takes folk away from the tools. There tends to be more of the personality-based stuff. And just generally a bit more goofing off. That all holds true tonight, with the added spice of a "scandal". This being The Block, that scandal involves splashbacks and parquetry. It is also absolutely milked for all it's worth – you will well and truly have had enough of it by the end of the hour. But it delivers a couple of genuine human moments as well. Elsewhere the challenge involves generating material through "upswapping" (no, me neither) that can then be auctioned off on behalf of Ronald McDonald House. ("For the kids!" as the contestants keep reminding themselves.) It's an online auction, which goes live at the end of the show, so if you fancy buying yourself some luxury goods for a worthy cause, jump on in.

The Block.

Gruen

ABC, Wednesday, 8.30pm

Just as Utopia keeps getting more relevant, not less, the more time passes, so it is for Gruen. The more saturated our environments become with advertising and the sneakier that advertising is the more we need a show like this to dissect and demystify the relentless push to make us feel bad about ourselves and then buy stuff to help ease the pain. Wil, Todd and Russel will of course be back to chair proceedings, and joining them will be the usual eclectic selection of experts – including a bunch of kick-ass women. I hope someone will be able to tell me where the word "ooshies" came from, why everyone except me seems familiar with it, and when and how my computer became able to read my mind.
