PATNA: One Mukesh Kumar Sao (35) allegedly strangled his wife Kaushalya Devi (32) and 3-year-old daughter Radhika Kumari before hanging self at village Tetaria under Barhat police station in Jamui district on Tuesday night. He had also tried to kill his three other minor daughters in sleep. They fell unconscious, but survived.
In the suicide note recovered from their bedroom, Mukesh blamed himself for taking the extreme step.
He owned a small general store outside his house. SDPO (Sadar) Ram Pukar Singh said Mukesh had taken around Rs 20 lakh as loan from several villagers and a rural bank branch at Khaira in Barhat, which he was unable to repay.
The matter came to light on Wednesday morning when neither Mukesh nor his wife and daughters came out of their room. His mother called her elder son and other villagers who broke open the bedroom door, which was locked from inside.
"Mukesh was addicted to gambling. Police suspect he was under pressure to repay the debt and decided to commit suicide after killing his wife and daughters," the SDPO said. He said strangulation marks were found on the necks of his all four daughters.
'Bank manager not responsible'
"His three daughters were found unconscious and police rushed them to sadar hospital after reaching the spot at 8am. They were out of danger," the SDPO said.
He said Mukesh was found hanging from the ceiling while the dead as well as his three more daughters were lying on the bed.
"Mukesh has left a suicide note written in poor Hindi. He blamed himself for the incident. He also wrote that the rural bank's manager at Khaira had no role in this incident," he said.
The SDPO said a police team visited the bank, but none of the staff members had come to the office, perhaps due to information about the incident.
The bodies were handed over to the family members after postmortem.
