HYDERABAD: Two
sisters from
Nizamabad who were trafficked to Oman have been rescued by the Indian Embassy in
Muscat. “The two women contacted the embassy and they have now been put up in embassy’s guest house,” the embassy informed. After their plight came to light, the embassy provided a toll free number for the women to contact. The embassy has also sought the names of the agents and sponsors in Oman.
Ajmera Begum, mother of the two women, had written to Union external affairs minister S Jaishankar about the plight of her daughters in Muscat.
Shaheen Begum, 31, and her younger sister, Asma Begum, 26, were promised jobs as beauticians, but after landing in Muscat, they were forced to work as housemaids. When the job recruitment agents were asked to send them back, they demanded Rs 2 lakh for each woman.
In the letter, Ajmera Begum had said that her daughters were looking for jobs as their husbands were not looking after them well. A travel agent approached them and offered jobs as beauticians in Muscat. They were promised they would work at the same place, and be provided food and accommodation together for a salary of Rs 25,000 each.
Ajmera Begum said that after her elder daughter Shaheen reached Muscat on July 9, 2019, and the younger one, Asma, followed her on August 25. Both were taken to a recruitment agency in Muscat after landing. However, they were not given jobs as beauticians, but forced to go out and work as housemaids at different places, and asked to stay separately.
