PUNE: A 29-year-old man was arrested from Rajkot in Gujarat on Thursday on the charges of harassing a computer engineering student by sending her obscene messages on a social networking platform on Sunday.
Police said the suspect, originally from Satara, was working as a cook at a catering company in Rajkot at the time of his arrest. “The student (19), also a native of Satara, was residing at a girl’s hostel in the city for her studies,” an officer from the Samarth police said.
The police said the cook’s wife knew the girl and had her contact number saved on her cellphone.
On Sunday, the suspect unlocked his wife’s cellphone and donned a fake identity to introduce himself to the girl over a text message. He later began sending obscene messages to the girl. “He also traced the girl on a social media website and downloaded her pictures, before morphing and sending them back to her,” the officer said.
“Technical investigations have revealed that the suspect had used his wife’s cellphone for committing the crime,” the officer said, adding that a police team headed by senior inspector Balkrishna Kadam arrested the suspect from Rajkot and brought him to Pune for further investigations.
“The suspect is also wanted in a similar case registered with the Karad police,” the officer said.
