According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will not have Tommy John surgery, also called UCL reconstruction, and is expected to be back for the 2020 season. Roethlisberger is expected to undergo season-ending elbow surgery this week, ESPN sources said. While the nature of the injury remains unknown, a second source told ESPN there is complete optimism that Roethlisberger will be "ready to roll next season." Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said the details of Roethlisberger's injury will be confirmed post-surgery based on what doctors find out in the process. Last week, Roethlisberger released a statement through the team, vowing to come back from his injury and be "stronger than ever" in the 2020 season. Roethlisberger said it was "shocking and heartbreaking" to learn he needs surgery that will sideline him for the rest of 2019. "I love this game, my teammates, the Steelers organization and fans, and I feel in my heart I have a lot left to give," he said.Mason Rudolph, a third-round draft pick last year, will make his first career start Sunday at San Francisco. Devlin Hodges, an undrafted rookie from Samford, has been promoted from the practice squad to back him up.
