LIMBANG: The National Landscape Department has approved RM15 million for building a public park specifically for extreme sports at Limbang’s old airstrip.

Assistant Minister of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail announced this when officiating at the 2019 Limbang Division Tug of War Closed Competition at Limbang Sports Complex on Saturday.

“There will be a meeting with the appointed consultant for the park project next week to discuss the detailed plan for the park such as drag race or motocross.”

Dr Abdul Rahman, who is also Bukit Kota assemblyman, said the plan is one of the state government’s efforts to make Limbang a place for extreme sports like tug of war, body building, strong men competition, drag race, motocross and many others.

At the same time, he added that the state government would also continue to improve the sports facilities in the division by building more futsal courts at villages, petanque court at Limbang Civic Centre, basketball court and tennis court at RPR Batu Biah.

“The state government is also planning to build Limbang Times Square costing RM5 million at Limbang District Council’s field for the people to conduct recreational activities.”

On the tug-of-war competition, he said the event merely served as a warming-up session and early preparation for local teams from Limbang and Lawas for the 2019 Limbang Open International Tug-of-War Championship to be held in November this year.

For this year’s championship, he added, the organiser had increased the prizes whereby the champion team will walk home with RM15,000 cash prize.

“The championship is organised by Limbang Division Tug of War Association and it is the third for this year to vie for the Chief Minister’s Trophy.”

A total of eight teams from Limbang and one team from Lawas took part in the 2019 Limbang Division Tug of War Closed Competition.

Chainblock Limbang emerged champion in the competition followed by Green Head 12 (second) with the third place shared by Red Qaawai and Warisan Awat-Awat Lawas.

The champion team took home cash prize of RM1,000 and a trophy while the second and third place winners respectively received RM800 and RM500 cash plus a trophy each.

Also present were Limbang District Council chairman councillor Sufian Mohat, who is also Limbang Division Tug Of War Association chairman, Limbang District Council deputy chairman Dahlan Dullah, Limbang district officer representative Ratnawati Tuah and Pemanca Abu Bakar Tinggal.
