Teen jumps to death from highrise after being diagnosed with cancer
MUMBAI: A teenaged collegian jumped off the 27th floor of a plush Goregaon highrise on Saturday on learning that she had been diagnosed with cancer. Police said she had texted her brother and father about her decision to take the drastic step. An accidental death case has been recorded by the Dindoshi police.
The 19-year-old victim (identity kept confidential) hailed from Indore.
She had come to Mumbai to pursue her higher studies and lived in a paying guest accomodation in Goregaon with three other girls studying in her college. All of them were preparing for their upcoming exams and would often study together, police said.
A few days ago, the teen's health deteriorated. She underwent a battery of medical tests and received the reports on Saturday. The reports revealed that she had cancer. The teen was shattered with the news and texted her father and brother in Indore. She stated in her text that she was grateful for everything they had done for her and that she had lived a happy life but she did not intend to spend the rest of her days in pain and glued to the bed. She thanked them and also apologised in her texts. The text has led the Dindoshi police to believe that her death was a suicide.
"After she leapt off the 27th floor, residents of the highrise rushed to the location where her body was found. They then took her to a hospital where doctors pronounced her dead," said a police officer. The body was sent to the Siddharth Hospital's post-mortem centre for an autopsy. The police informed the girl's family about her death. Her family is on their way to Mumbai.
"We are also making inquiries with the teen's roommates. Her phone has been sent to the state forensic science laboratory for an analysis," said the officer.
