Henderson reveals free-kick advice he gave to Trent

Jordan Henderson has revealed the free-kick advice he gave Trent Alexander-Arnold just before the right-back fired Liverpool into a 1-0 lead against Chelsea.

The well-worked set-piece saw Mohamed Salah intricately backheel the ball into the path of the 20-year-old who rifled it past Spain international Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Liverpool’s official Instagram shared a clip of the strike, and Henderson jokingly replied: “Think I just said put it straight in the top bin”.

Adrian 'gets better and better' as Firmino 'takes advantage' of Chelsea

BBC pundit and former frontman Garth Crooks has included both Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian and attacker Roberto Firmino in his team of the week.

Adrian produced a fine display to help his side win 2-1 against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge while Firmino scored the winning goal for the Reds.

About the two Liverpool players, Crooks wrote:

Adrian: The Liverpool stand in goalkeeper seems to get better every time I see him. The save from Tammy Abraham in the game’s early exchanges was as good if not as important as it gets. The Spanish keeper then came for a cross and plucked the ball out of the air with supreme confidence.

It was Adrian’s first-half performance that provided Liverpool with the platform to go on and win this game. Chelsea, on the other hand, had enough chances to come away with a point but too many players fluffed their lines.

When Liverpool start winning games when not playing well it’s a bad sign for the rest of the league.

Did you know? Adrian hasn’t conceded more than once in any of his last nine Premier League appearances, ending on the winning side in eight of these games (one draw).

Roberto Firmino: I think VAR is going to be the death of us all in the end. Nevertheless, Liverpool used the technology to their benefit and Roberto Firmino in particular.

There is no doubt in my mind that when VAR comes into action one team suffers and the other gains a massive psychological advantage.

While Chelsea were suffering from VAR’s discovery that Mason Mount’s big toe was offside the Brazil international took complete advantage of the situation and put the game beyond the Blues.

This was not a classic Liverpool performance but even VAR can’t stop a team from winning ugly.

Did you know? Roberto Firmino has been directly involved in 10 goals in his last 11 Premier League games for Liverpool, scoring five and assisting five.

Heskey believes Liverpool may struggle to dethrone City in race for title

Emile Heskey believes Liverpool may struggle to dethrone Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title due to squad depth.

“It’s a tall order because at this moment in time City have the best squad in terms of depth,” Heskey told Omnisport as per Goal.

“If you take certain players out of City they’ve always got someone who can step in and do a specific job, the way the manager wants him to do it.

“Liverpool, if you take Salah, Mane or Firmino out, it’s not quite the same, whereas City have a better blend.

“I think City have a better midfield. I’m not saying Liverpool’s midfield is bad, by the way, I’m just saying they have a better blend and they probably give you more goals from midfield.

“But if [Liverpool] keep the pressure on like they are doing, you never know.”

Former Liverpool striker Heskey spent four-and-a-half seasons at Anfield, winning the FA Cup, UEFA Cup and League Cup under Gerard Houllier.

Robertson makes Liverpool Premier League table vow after Chelsea victory

The left-back was excellent once again in the Reds 2-1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge which helped his side to maintain a five point gap at the top of the domestic table.

“We’re not looking at the table just yet, there is still a long, long way to go,” Robertson told Sky Sports.

“Don’t get me wrong, it’s lovely to be five points clear but there are going to be twists and turns this season, as there were last season.

“We’ve got off to a good start but it’s about keeping that going and keeping the momentum.

“If we keep winning our games, that’s all that matters. But we won’t look at the table until it gets interesting.”

MK Dons v Liverpool: Did you know?

I know we’re probably not quite ready to leave all the Chelsea reaction just yet given that it was such a solid win away from home however, the games are coming thick and fast and next up for Liverpool is MK Dons on Wednesday in the League Cup.

Just to get you thinking a little bit about that game here is a short factfile:

  • This is the first ever meeting between MK Dons and Liverpool in any competition.
  • MK Dons have reached the third round of the League Cup for the first time since 2015-16, when they were beaten 6-0 at home by Southampton – Liverpool’s Sadio Mané scored twice inside 25 minutes that day.
  • Liverpool have won each of their last nine League Cup meetings with third-tier sides since a 1-0 defeat in Peterborough in 1991 under Graeme Souness.
  • MK Dons manager Paul Tisdale took Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool to a replay when his Exeter City side faced the Reds in the third round of the FA Cup in 2015-16. They drew 2-2 at home before falling to a 3-0 defeat at Anfield.

Lampard believes Chelsea were better than Liverpool but says one player lost his side the game

Frank Lampard believes Chelsea were the better team in defeat to Liverpool – but admits the Reds must act as an inspiration for his players.

When asked if his team were the better on the day, Lampard said: “On performance, yes. Particularly the second half.

“With that, you have to say details lose you games. (Roberto) Firmino lost us the game because we didn’t mark him (for the second goal).

“But the way we played in the second half was the way that we want to be, and we did it against Liverpool.

“At half-time 2-0 down you can take it on the chin that this team is too good and we can’t turn it around, but we did the opposite. But we need points.

“We have to aspire to be like Liverpool. They come here and don’t play their best and still win the game.

“Liverpool are a strong team and you can lose. The difference between us and Liverpool is that we aren’t consistently as good as them or Manchester City week in week out. To work towards those levels is hard. It’s a daily thing.”

“We are a team, we win together and we lose together,” he told the club’s official website.

“The other night in the Champions League against Napoli we lost, I don’t think we deserved to have that result and it was really hard for us, but we recover well. We are back in the Premier League and back to winning.

“It’s always important to have a good connection between all of the players, also the fans, the crowd, the manager, the staff – everyone.

“We are like a rock now and we are together. We are enjoying this moment but we need to keep looking forward for more points.”

Carragher believes Liverpool need to target 100 points to win title

Jamie Carragher believes both Liverpool and Manchester City need to be targeting 100 points this season.

The Reds made it six wins from six in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, with two first half goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino handing Jurgen Klopp’s side a 2-1 win over Chelsea.

The win extends Liverpool’s lead to five points at the top of the table, and speaking afterwards on Sky Sports, Carragher believes his former side’s win at Stamford Bridge was a big one.

He said: “It’s a big one. I think with City and Liverpool, even at this early stage, they look at each others fixtures and there’s no doubt when one of them goes away from home to another big side, it’s an opportunity for them to drop points.

“I think for both sides, whether they get there or not, the target has got to be 100 points. City got 100 points two years ago, 98 last season, and you can only drop 14 points then, so a draw is not a good result.

“In the past, 10 or 15 years ago, you go away to United, Chelsea, Arsenal, you get a point and your happy but City have changed that in the last few years, so actually coming away and drawing is not a good result.

“To actually get to the three points, and don’t forget the record of Liverpool in these games last season, that’s where they lost the league because City came to these grounds and won, so it is a big one.

“It’s still an early stage, a long way to go, but it’s a big one for Liverpool. For City watching, they’ve got an easy one at home against Watford, but in a few weeks time they’ll have this sort of game where they will have to go away and win.”

Mane injury latest

Jurgen Klopp confirmed that Sadio Mane suffered a dead leg in the 2-1 win over Chelsea on Sunday.

The Senegal international was replaced for James Milner immediately after N’Golo Kante’s 71st-minute strike had given the home side hope.

Mane limped away from Stamford Bridge after the game and appeared to be in some discomfort as he walked out of the stadium.

Klopp described the problems as “an awful combination” and the Reds attacker could sit out Wednesday night’s trip to MK Dons in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Klopp said: “Sadio has a knock on the bone around the knee and a dead leg. It’s an awful combination.

“He tried everything but there was one counter situation when he really tried, on a non-dead leg day he’d have got the ball, but we had to say ‘come on now’ and made the change.”

If we receive any other update we’ll post it in the live blog as soon as possible.

Liverpool warned five point lead over City 'not so significant'

Liverpool’s five point lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League is “not so significant”, according to Jose Mourinho.

The Reds kept up their perfect start to their season in the league with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Chelsea on Sunday and are the first team to win the first six games in successive domestic campaigns.

“Five points lead to Man City, I don’t think it is significant,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.

“Liverpool obviously they are going to lose a match, like City lost to Norwich. They will lose a match.

“They are going to drop a couple of points here and there and City are capable of having a run like Liverpool is having now. I think this five points gap is not so significant.

“But we were speaking before the game, it is better to go in the top of the league, it’s better to look back and see my biggest rival.

“City today, it’s one of these matches, where they think, Stamford Bridge, even a draw is good for them, they go from five to three.

“In the end it is a big victory for Liverpool.”
