SPORTS SHORTS: MCC succumbs to Iowa Lakes rally

SPENCER — Iowa Lakes scored three unanswered goals in the second half and the No. 11 Lakers knocked off the No. 13 Marshalltown Community College men’s soccer team 4-3 on Saturday evening.

Jovoney Brown’s goal in the 83rd minute broke a 3-all tie for Iowa Lakes (8-1, 2-0), which trailed 3-1 at the half. Cameron Weston scored on penalty kicks in the 66th and 77th minutes for the Lakers before Brown got the game-winner with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation.

“I thought we played a fantastic first half,” said MCC head coach Rafael Martinez. “The players trusted the plan and executed it perfectly, which gave us a good lead into half. However, the second half became a game we didn’t want to play — very direct and physical — and we didn’t respond well.

“The fact that they tied the game with two penalty kicks within 15 minutes got us out of rhythm and focus and we paid for it at the end.”

Iowa Lakes was whistled for five yellow cards as well as two red cards, both coming in the final 11 minutes of the match. MCC received one yellow card.

The Lakers have averaged 5.6 goals per game in their current eight-game winning streak.

MCC (6-2, 1-1) got goals from Kazuki Kimura, Guilherme Pereira and Augusto Cunha in the first half to capture a 3-1 lead. Yushi Nagao assisted on Pereira’s team-leading seventh goal of the season, and Pereira also got an assist on Cunha’s goal with less than a minute left before intermission.

Matteo Crescente got the loss in goal for the Tigers, surrendering three goals on four shots on goal.

“I’m still very proud of how we played and faced the many difficulties we experienced, including several injuries as a result of the physicality of the match,” Martinez said. “Our guys never gave up and that defines this group of players. We now turn our attention to learn from this and use it on the next challenge.”

MCC is back at home for both of its matches this week, hosting Indian Hills on Tuesday and Iowa Central on Saturday. Both contests kick off at 3 p.m.
