Artistic achievements carved out of stone
A stone carving exhibition showcasing works by sculptor Chen Lizhong is on display at Han Tianheng Art Museum until October 10.
More than 130 pieces of stone sculptures by Chen and his 14 disciples are on show. They include lotus-themed works, landscapes, flower and bird carvings and some seals. They represent both the artist’s artistic achievements and the fruits of his teaching.
“Chen’s works are unique in China’s stone sculpture collection field. They were inspired by the artist’s daily life experience. Chen catches something spiritual and expresses it through his works,” said Han Tianheng, a renowned seal cutting artist.
“When I was working on my lotus-themed works, I used Liuling stones, a kind of stone with mixed colors of dark yellow and deep gray, to carve lotus leaves in autumn. And the result is quite satisfactory,” said Chen.
Through his lotus-themed works, Chen said he not only wants to express the beauty of lotus leaves in autumn, but also to praise the lofty and unyielding character of Chinese literati in the past 5,000 years.
