It was like Nicole Kidman clapping at the 2017 Oscars all over again when Natasha Lyonne gave her very palm-heavy impression of an applause at last night's Emmy Awards.

The Russian Doll star - who was nominated for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series - confused fans with her unique style of clap, which immediately took us back to Nicole's standing ovation complete with strange seal-like clapping for Meryl Streep two years ago.

Some fans said it looked as though she was giving herself a high five with her circular hand movement, which went viral during the ceremony last night. Which is sort of how we'd imagine Natasha's off-the-wall character Nadia doing it, to be fair.

Nicole of course went on give an explanation for her viral applause, which was compared to everything from E.T to The Grinch. She told Ellen DeGeneres that she was trying not to damage the expensive diamond rings she was wearing.

"I borrowed these expensive jewels, and I'm like, 'I must not damage these diamonds,' because I have to give them back at midnight," she recalled. "And they went back beautifully intact, with not a scratch on them."

Fair play.

Russian Doll - which will be returning for a second season - lost out to Fleabag for Outstanding Comedy Series, while Phoebe Waller-Bridge beat Natasha to win Lead Actress in a Comedy Series too. Phoebe also took home the award for Writing For a Comedy, pipping Russian Doll writers Natasha, Allison Silverman and Amy Poehler to the post.

Russian Doll is set to get even "weirder" when it returns, Natasha recently confirmed.

Speaking with Netflix vp originals Cindy Holland at Recode's Code Conference in Arizona (via The Hollywood Reporter), the Orange is the New Black actress revealed: "Same show, just weirder."
