Liverpool continued their 100 per cent start to the season and maintain their five point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

The Reds beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino getting on the scoreboard.

But the most eye-catching result of the weekend came at the Etihad Stadium as Manchester City romped to an unbelievable 8-0 annihilation of Watford .

Pep Guardiola's men were 5-0 up in 18 minutes thanks to David Silva, Sergio Aguero, Riyad Mahrez, Bernardo Silva and Nicolas Otamendi, before Bernardo completed a hat-trick and Kevin De Bruyne notched.

Elsewhere, West Ham shocked Manchester United with a 2-0 home victory, while Arsenal and Leicester joined them on 11 points to keep pace with City.

Burnley , Bournemouth and Sheffield United also gathered three points, with draws coming between Newcastle and Brighton , and Crystal Palace and ten man Wolves .

But which players really impressed on the sixth weekend of Premier League action? (spoilers, no Watford players have been included)

Adrian (Liverpool)

It wasn't a vintage weekend for Premier League goalkeepers, with plenty of solid yet unspectacular performances - with Lukas Fabianski, Nick Pope, Dean Henderson and Aaron Ramsdale all worthwhile contenders.

But Reds shotstopper Adrian is our pick between the sticks for his performance against Chelsea.

The former West Ham man is mainly in the team for his vital early block to deny a clean through Tammy Abraham, which would have made it 1-1.

Adrian looked confident throughout, typified by his much improved distribution, and could do little about N'Golo Kante's thunderbolt.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

Alexander-Arnold has the potential to turn into one of the world's best wingers, a la Gareth Bale, but until then his right-back displays are continuing to stagger.

He boasted the most passes and chances for Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, had the same amount of touches as full-back partner Andy Robertson and didn't make a foul.

As for his bullet free kick, we'll leave Trent to describe that himself: “I thought it was too close to go over the wall, I didn’t know if the wall was going to jump so I couldn’t go under it, I had to go ‘keeper’s side.

“It was a good roll and I just tried to put it as hard as I can that side with a bit of placement.”

Jack O'Connell (Sheffield United)

Not many teams go to Goodison Park and keep a clean sheet.

In fact, only Liverpool, City and Leicester, the current top three in the Premier League, have shutout Everton at home in 2019 before this weekend.

In truth, any of O'Connell, John Egan or Chris Basham would deserve a place in the team of the week - but we have picked for the former for his 16 clearances, 10 aerial battle victories and two blocks.

For someone making just their sixth Premier League appearance it was accomplished and piles the pressure onto Marco Silva.

Nathan Ake (Bournemouth)

Bournemouth's first ever victory away at Southampton on Friday night has been overlooked after the weekend action, but it was another exception demonstration of Eddie Howe's managerial prowess.

The Cherries aren't renowned for their defensive solidity, but Nathan Ake and Steve Cook, barring his penalty tackle, were exceptional at St Mary's.

Dutchman Ake stood out though with his headed goal capping another quality performance.

The Virgil van Dijk-clone will be on plenty of radars come January or next summer.

Aaron Cresswell (West Ham)

Cresswell had two free kicks in similar areas against the Red Devils.

The first one he pinged over the bar, with David De Gea covering it comfortably, but the second, oh how it sung.

Twenty five yards out, just right of centre, four man wall (which included Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire) and De Gea seemingly set perfectly.

Cresswell wraps his left foot around it and into the top corner.

Perfect.

Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)

Time for a Manchester City player to make an appearance!

Bernardo Silva might have taken home the match ball, but there is a strong argument that De Bruyne was the man of the match.

The Belgium, who had a quiet 2018/19 season, assisted both David and Bernardo Silva before getting the eighth goal to re-find his 2017/17 form.

The cross to set up David Silva, in under 60 seconds, is one of those you would report to EA as a bug next week when FIFA 20 comes out - it was just too unrealistic.

James Maddison (Leicester)

Leicester's victory over Tottenham was overshadowed by VAR - which was correct it everything decision it made, because that is literally its job.

But Maddison almost single handedly took the headlines away from the controversy with a perfect strike into the bottom corner five minutes before the end.

His drive and vision is among the reason the Foxes are sitting third in the table - he gets the best out of both himself and his attacking teammates as he always seems to move the game forward.

Bernardo Silva (Manchester City)

A first professional hat-trick on Saturday.

Pity about his offensive tweet on Sunday.

Andriy Yarmolenko (West Ham)

Because of Yarmolenko's Achilles injury in October last season, the Ukrainian feels like a fresh new signing at the London Stadium.

The forward completed a fine Hammers move to open the scoring with aplomb against United, to take his tally to two this campaign.

West Ham in general had a swagger which refused to bow down to the Red Devils' history, with Mark Noble and Felipe Anderson near-misses in this side.

Chris Wood (Burnley)

Centre forward 101 with Chris Wood.

Stand at the near post and rise highest from a corner. Check.

The New Zealander finally managed to steal the Claret limelight from Ashley Barnes to bring Norwich back down to earth.

Nicolas Pepe (Arsenal)

This is a joint-place for Pepe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - they can play 45 minutes each in this imaginary game.

Record signing Pepe gets the nod on the team sheet though for bagging his first goal for the Gunners from the penalty spot.

He waited for the keeper to dive and swept it where he had just move from.

Aubameyang saved the Gunners from dropping points with a sweetly struck free kick, although we reckon Pepe, who was also stood over it, would have done exactly the save but with his left foot.

Unai Emery's men possibly didn't deserve three points but after the way they capitulated against the Hornets last week this was an important confidence booster - and keeps them in the top four mix.
