A 17-year-old boy was fatally shot Sunday night, and two other teens were wounded in front of an apartment building in the Anacostia neighborhood of Southeast Washington, according to D.C. police.

Authorities identified the dead as Jamel Kirkland, who lived in the Naylor Gardens neighborhood, about two miles from where he was shot. Police said the other youths were struck in the hand and foot.

Police had not made any arrests as of Monday and said they did not know of a possible motive. Kirkland was the eighth person between the ages of 11 and 17 to be killed this year. He was the third since the end of August.

The shooting occurred about 9:50 p.m. in the 1300 block of Morris Road SE, two blocks from Anacostia’s commercial strip. Police said they found Kirkland lying in front of an apartment building with a gunshot wound to his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Relatives could not be reached Monday.

There have been 129 homicides in the District this year, a 19 percent increase over this time in 2018.
