Low income families in Scotland could be entitles to a number of benefits through the Scottish Social Security Service.

Since launching last year, the new service has helped nearly 100,000 Scots paying out £190million.

The service was launched as part of a major transfer of power from Westminster prompted by the independence referendum .

Four key benefits families could be entitled too are the Best Start Grant, Best Start Foods, funeral support payment and carer's allowance supplement.

Here's what they are and how to apply:

Best Start Grant

The Best Start Grant includes three one off grants; the pregnancy and baby payment, early learning payment and school age payment.

The payments are part of the Scottish Government’s new package to support families in receipt of eligible benefits - including Universal Credit, Income Support, Housing Benefit and tax credits - to help at key stages in a child’s life.

The pregnancy and baby payment is to help with the cost of pregnancy or having a new baby. You can apply from 24 weeks pregnant up to the day your baby is six months old.

If it is your first child you will receive £600, if it is your second of third child you will be entitled to £300 per child.

The early learning grant is a one-off payment of £250 when your child starts nursery, and children between the ages of two to three and a half are eligible. The grant can be used for clothes, shoes, books and days out.

And the school age grant is to cover the cost of your child starting school. So you can purchase uniforms, shoes and books.

All applicants must meet the qualifying criteria, so if you receive Universal Credit, income support, pension credit, housing benefit, child tax credit, working tax credit, you will be able to apply.

Best Start Food card

You can use your Best Start Foods card to buy food in shops or online. It is paid to help you buy healthy food for your baby including plain cow's milk, instant formula, vegetables, eggs, and fresh lentils and beans.

You can apply for Best Start Foods when you're pregnant, or any time up to your child turning 3 years old. This goes up to 4 years old for a child who's over 2 years old when you apply.

The payments are £17 every four weeks during pregnancy, £34 every four weeks from your child being born until they are one, and £17 every four weeks between the ages of 1 and 3.

Funeral Support Payment

Bereaved families are vulnerable to the rising cost of funerals

 

Funeral Support Payment helps pay for funeral costs if you live in Scotland. You can use the payment towards funeral costs for a baby, child or adult. This includes babies who were stillborn.

It usually will not cover the full cost of the funeral but it should help pay for some costs.

You can apply if you or your partner are getting certain benefits or tax credits.

Carer's Allowance Supplement

This is an extra payment for people in Scotland who get Carer's Allowance on a particular date.

Carer's Allowance Supplement is paid 2 times a year.

If you're getting Carer's Allowance on 15 April 2019 you should get a Carer's Allowance Supplement  payment  on 24 June 2019.

If you were getting Carer's Allowance on 15 April 2019, and did not receive a Carer's Allowance Supplement payment in June 2019, you'll get this payment as part of the December 2019 Carer's Allowance Supplement payments.

The exact date of the December payment will be confirmed later this year. If you're due to get a payment, you'll get a letter from  Social Security Scotland  before the payment is made.
