AURANGABAD: A police constable, facing corruption charges, committed
suicide by hanging himself at his residence in the wee hours of Monday. The 56-year-old constable was attached to the city police commissionorate headquarters.
The deceased has been identified as Umakant Padmakar Patil, a resident of Banjara Colony. Police said they have not recovered any suicide note so far.
Citing his wife’s statement, Kranti Chowk police said Patil committed suicide sometime between 4am and 5.30am on Monday.
The incident came to light after his wife found him hanging from the ceiling with a rope.
She immediately raised an alarm and with the help of neighbours, rushed him to the Government Medical College and Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Patil’s children, who were in different cities, rushed home on receiving news of their father’s death. The constable’s body was handed over to the family after an autopsy.
Inspector Uttam Mudak told the TOI, “The constable returned home late on Sunday, following which he was reportedly unwell. His wife took him to the hospital and after returning home, the two were talking till 3.30 am.”
Mudak said that the relatives of the deceased claimed that he was under tremendous stress over the on-going hearing in the
corruption case he was facing.
Sources said that during Patil’s previous posting at the Jinsi police station, he was caught red handed by sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Bureau.
After having been suspended for a while, he was reinstated in service and served at the police headquarters.
Upon completion of the probe, ACB officials had filed a chargesheet in the court and one of the hearings in the case was scheduled for Monday.
A case of accidental death has been registered at Kranti Chowk police station.
