A 10-year-old girl died in Mumbai on Tuesday after a portion of a five-storey building collapsed in suburban Khar.

While Mahi Motvani was immediately rushed to nearby Lilavati hospital in Bandra, she was declared brought dead.

Soon after the building collapsed, Motvani's mother discovered that her daughter got trapped under debris and sounded an alarm.

The incident occurred at around 2.20 pm when a part of a staircase of the residential building, located near Khar Gymkhana, collapsed.

Rescue teams have already vacated the entire building as a precautionary measure. However, they could not save Motvani, who got trapped in the debris immediately after part of the building collapsed.

'BUILDING IS SHAKING'

Mahi stayed along with her mother and younger brother on the fourth floor of the building. She was sitting in the hall when the incident occurred.

Just a minute before the building collapsed, Mahi told her mother that the building is shaking. Her mother immediately came to the hall area and within seconds, the portion of the hall near the window side where Mahi was sitting collapsed.

Mahi along with the sofa and wall fell down from the fourth floor. Her mother was just inches from saving her daughter, but could not. Mahi was down stuck deep inside the debris while her mother was stuck on the fourth floor.

As the building's staircase portion had collapsed, there was no way for her to come down. Mahi's mother was rescued by the NDRF team with the help of ladder. But it was too late by the time they discovered her daughter.

Four fire engines along with rescue vans, an ambulance, a team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team and police personnel rushed to the spot after the building collapse. The incident again raises several questions over the safety of old buildings that keep collapsing in Mumbai.
